Choices...

Everyday we make choices. Big choices, small choices, green choices, important choices, insignificant choices....but we make them without realizing that we have a choice. So many times the choices we make are not real choices but are made for us by forces outside of us. First and foremost we are persuaded by advertisement, through billboards, pop ups, television, newspapers or by advocates who have already realized their power to choose. Without educating us they advocate for their choice and we are swayed. Strong advocates for atheism, going vegetarian, going green, going organic, the list goes on. Then there is a modern and current sway which catches us unawares. You are caught in the domino effect and don't even realize your own conversion. And its a strange conversion because you always were what you suddenly start claiming but now you have to define your self, you cant choose to live in the border area, you have to declare. Not only that you have to now start defending your position, even if its liberalism!

And all these choices are seldom our own choices. We are made to make these choices suddenly, in mid sentence or mid aisle. We make them watching a film or reading a book. We make them in response to something or the other, in a flip second. But once made they start effecting all our other choices and suddenly become a paradigm through which we see the world, it narrows the world for us.

What if we actually became aware of our own power to choose?

I believe its not a coherent argument if I was not able to clear this significant point, but it boils down to this that choice is a liberation but it has to go through a process, it has to be adapted and then adopted knowledgeably. Any thing less then that is not a choice but a sway with the current, an influence which can be permanent and damaging with long term effects as it colors all your future choices. A choice is a choice only when its made consciously!

Fantasy or reality: Where do we want to live?

An eagle is told that it once lived in huge nests on high mountains and tall trees at high altitudes and the big bird scoffs at such a preposterous idea. How can such a big bird living in caves and hunting on rodents soar in the skies over mountain tops and oceans. Not a bad idea but quite unlikely. Seems like these humans are crazy and think of anything about other animals to hide their own embarrassment over their monkey ancestry. Pick up any great novel, Hundred Years of Solitude, Blindness, Beloved, Alchemist or any others that you have read where imagination is stretched but you flow with the narrative. You easily believe what the writer is asking of you. It seems plausible and hence possible and you like a bird open your wings and fly where the winds of possibilities take you. Marquez creates a parallel world of freedom and we camp in this world with him; Morrison brings a spirit from the dead and we unblinkingly accept her character; Saramago presents a sightless world to us ...

Clenched Fist Experiment

As you read through this blog, I request you to be a part of an experiment, clench your fist tightly and then read through and while reading make sure that you keep it firmly clenched and do not relax your hold. Now lets get back to the blog. 'Not a leaf flutters without the will and command of its Lord', not a verbatim translation but points to the same message. If this is true then all our plans, our ambitions, our visions and also our codes of morality, value systems, ethics, these are all pre-ordained and nothing in this system can be credited to our own loftiness or rise in stature as human beings but rather an accident. (I hope the fist is clenched tight). If we believe in this system it is purely circumstantial and not because we have in any way risen in our human value to acquire these lofty ideals. Because after all everything is in the knowledge of God and ordained! (mind the fist please) If this is assumed to be true then should we be living every minute of our ...

A classic case of putting your foot in your mouth!

Its been a couple of days since Imran Khan and Reham Khan announced their separation and decision to divorce. Nothing out of the ordinary there, as the decision to marry was also theirs, except maybe the timing of the announcement which coincided with the local bodies elections and may have had an impact but thats something which would be very difficult to gauge. What I do find quite extraordinary and almost bordering on incredulous is the amazing audacity of PTI supporters to present this break up as a result of some sort of principled stand by Mr. Khan. The idea being that Ms. Khan wanted to play a role in party politics and Mr. Khan could not bring himself to allow this so he had to sacrifice his marriage for his principled stand! How utterly outrageous is this! This is not principled stance but rather immaturity and shortsightedness. These two got into this relationship out of probably love and, I would assume, mutual admiration and respect. It was definitely not an 'arranged...
