Reclaim your Land!

Are we running out of options to save something more important than religion, national unity and economy, something absolutely integral and that is our very survival. Survival not of the state or nation but of the individual. Human beings are selfish and it is important to accept it, respect it and have no illusions about this and that is why I say it is not about someone with a burqa in North Waziristan, nor about a bearded guy in Swat, its about Sunny going to Hot spot in Islamabad, or Hadia going to buy shoes at Ehsaans in Liberty Market. Its crystal clear who is under attack, its the common man/woman in Pakistan. We are under attack. Our way of life, our existence!

NWFP is under Taliban rule and lets not mince any words about that. Balochistan was already fighting with the central government for its rights and now the allied forces of NATO have targeted the 'Taliban' there, whats next is no enigma, Taliban will surely move (if they are not already present there) to fight for the survival of Islam! If we feel these two provinces are removed from our lives as we have always felt that NWFP and Balochistan have been on the fringes of our national identity then behold as these groups have in a very clear way announced that Punjab is next with the attack in Manawan and now Chakwal!

Are we now going to wait for the fight to come even closer and enter our homes? What are we waiting for? Or a better question is what can we do? There is only one thing left to do now which is to ask ourselves some important questions. Which side are we on? Is our interpretation of our faith the same as what these spokes people have taken upon themselves to propagate? If not then what is it? We need to have a counter ideology. What is our history? Do we own the history of the land itself? Or do we still persist that our history only crosses the Arabian sea to reach Makkah! Does our history only start with Mohammad Bin Qasim entering Sindh? Are Moen Jo Daro, Harappa: the great Indus valley Civilization, Kathak, Sitar, Karahi Gosht, Bulleh Shah, Baba Ganj Shakar peripheral and unnecessary burdens or even worst: improvisations in our history. The longer we treat this history like an illegitimate child, longer it will take to own this fight for survival and lesser the chance to survive. We pride ourselves on being liberals or moderate Muslims without actually realizing what it entails. We need to accept where Junoon came from, why we like Nighat Chaudhary, why we hurt when Bamian Statues were destroyed, where the recipe for Chicken Tikka and Shami Kebab comes from. When Indians, Saudis, Iraqis, Iranians, Lebanese are in the room we have more in common with Indians then any of the other groups. Its about time we stopped feeling shame in this and accepting our own identity. That is the only thing that will defeat the Taliban. This land is ours, we have not 1400 year claim but a claim going back thousands of years. We can be Muslims and Indians (as the word 'India', according to Wikipedia, is derived from Indus, which is a further derivation from the Old Persian word Hindu, from Sanskrit Sindhu, the historic local appellation for the Indus River).

We do not have to give up one to own another least of all when we talk of history. It is time now to reclaim what is ours but we need to know for ourselves what we are reclaiming!

Captains!

Haven't written in a while and those following my blog would know by now that whenever something disturbing on the world scene happens, I stop writing. Its an irony because usually writers provide solace through their writings while I, lose all power of expression when I am disturbed. And then what is there to write? Follow any newspaper from around the world and there is only one message that you get: Pakistan is rapidly slipping into an abyss! I was born in the 70s and have grown up in the 90s, I have vague recollection of the 80s even though I was not old enough to understand what life under Zia's martial law was like but I have seen relay race of power between Benazir and Nawaz Sharif in the 90s but never in our history have we been so unsafe. Where every person big or small, significant or otherwise, powerful or weak, rich or poor is exposed equally to this invisible enemy. Call it what you might, Taliban, extremist, jihadi, Al Qaeda, seperatist, a murderer by any name is ...

Naseem, is a six year old girl. When I met her she was sitting on the charpoi with her mother and constantly clapping but without any mirth. Her hair was cut almost to her scalp. I was told that she was a miracle child, she had been suffering from severe acute malnutrition and her family and relatives had almost given up hope that she would survive but she had proven all stats wrong and was sitting right in front of us. Physically, she was on the mend but her mental growth had been irreversibly stunted. She did not respond to any movement, any gesture or sound, her mind was somewhere else... A little boy, hardly seven, sitting on the curbside on an otherwise busy junction but at 0100AM he seemed so out of place on that dark, deserted road. As we stopped at the traffic signal, on the road perpendicular to where he was sitting, my attention was drawn to his posture. His slumped back was towards me and as I watched, two cars stopped on the lanes furthest from him. He made an ...

A classic case of putting your foot in your mouth!

Its been a couple of days since Imran Khan and Reham Khan announced their separation and decision to divorce. Nothing out of the ordinary there, as the decision to marry was also theirs, except maybe the timing of the announcement which coincided with the local bodies elections and may have had an impact but thats something which would be very difficult to gauge. What I do find quite extraordinary and almost bordering on incredulous is the amazing audacity of PTI supporters to present this break up as a result of some sort of principled stand by Mr. Khan. The idea being that Ms. Khan wanted to play a role in party politics and Mr. Khan could not bring himself to allow this so he had to sacrifice his marriage for his principled stand! How utterly outrageous is this! This is not principled stance but rather immaturity and shortsightedness. These two got into this relationship out of probably love and, I would assume, mutual admiration and respect. It was definitely not an 'arranged...
